“Lock 11 at the Mildura Wharf is located approximately 800 meters upstream from the Weir and has played a crucial role in river transport since the 1800s. The Weir aims to raise the water level and increase pressure for the Mildura and Red Cliffs irrigation pumps. Lock 11 consists of 24 steel trestles, each weighing approximately 11 tonnes. The storage capacity of the Weir Pool is 36,200 megalitres. The lock is filled when four butterfly valves upstream are opened. Water reaches the lock chamber via two tunnels, each accommodating approximately 4.5 megalitres. Visitors can access the island between the lock and the Weir during the day. The island's 15 hectares of bushland provide a sanctuary for many native species.”
