Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is built around the state heritage-listed Warrnambool Lighthouse, established in 1858. The museum recently underwent a major redevelopment, including interactive digital installations and a full upgrade of the Sound and Light show, now called Tales of the Shipwreck Coast. Flagstaff Hill is home to hundreds of relics from Warrnambool’s past. Several buildings feature digital displays where you can learn about life in the 19th century. Holding Victoria’s most extensive marine and shipwreck collection, the village’s standout piece is the $4 million Loch Ard Peacock, a priceless relic from the wreck of the Loch Ard, which was lost in 1878 at the famous Loch Ard Gorge. The village also offers guided tours.

2025 Update: Wheelchair access is available at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village.

The gardens have an extensive collection of plants for budding botanists, including remnants of the original plantings and more than 40 coniferous species. The Lone Pine in the centre of the gardens was planted in 1934 and was grown from a seed collected from the original Lone Pine at Gallipoli, one of only two “offspring” trees still standing. Warrnambool Botanic Gardens features wide curving paths, old and rare plants, a band rotunda, and a lily pond home to ducks and turtles. Warrnambool Botanic Gardens are timeless and tranquil settings for weddings, picnics, peaceful walks, and the many guided tours and special events hosted throughout the year.
