“St Mary's Cathedral is a stunning example of English-style Perpendicular Gothic architecture designed by MF Cavanagh. The foundation stone was laid, and the cathedral was officially opened in 1930. St Mary's Cathedral is renowned for its beautiful stained glass windows, crafted by John Hardman of Birmingham, England. Initially, the city had outgrown a smaller church, prompting the local Bishop to call for the construction of a more fitting cathedral. Early challenges, such as labour shortages and funding issues, slowed the project's progress. However, with additional resources, construction continued and was completed over several years. Significant additions, such as the central altar and pulpit, were incorporated into the sanctuary during the cathedral's construction. The redesigned sanctuary was consecrated on 12 August 1973, following a major renovation, which included the relocation of the marble altar from the previous cathedral. This relocation occurred as part of a larger renovation and expansion of St Mary's Cathedral.”
