Taronga Western Plains Zoo was originally named Western Plains Zoo, commonly referred to as Dubbo Zoo, and was established in Dubbo on February 28, 1977. Its founding aimed to offer increased living and breeding space for larger animals like elephants and antelopes. Managed by the Taronga Conservation Society, the zoo initially housed 35 animals from six countries upon its opening. Distinguished by its open-range design, the zoo replaces walls and fences with concealed moats, providing visitors with an immersive experience that simulates being alongside animals in their natural habitat. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the first zoo constructed in Australia in 60 years.

TARONGA WESTERN PLAINS ZOO REVIEWS
Great zoo with plenty of things to see. Carts were good with room for only one car seat though and only 3 hours seems a bit short for the amount of attractions. Bikes with kid seats and trailers seem like the better option for families to have the full day. Decent food available and good gift shop.
We had an amazing experience at the zoo! The fallow deer was a standout as we happened to be there at feeding time. The zoo was busy in the morning but from about 2:30 onwards a calm descended over the zoo and it was wonderful. We went back a second day because we loved it so much.
We had a great time at the Zoo. Driving around takes about 3hrs to see most of the exhibits but not rushing. Next time we will be going using the electric buggies and would recommend going this way if you have a family or small group. The animals appear to have great enclosures with lots of space to roam, not feeling trapped. They all look well taken care of. There’s plenty to look at and the information on available to learn digitally about the exhibits is handy. More QR codes with text sites or videos would be appreciated.

WESTERN PLAINS CULTURAL CENTRE REVIEWS
This was an unexpectedly wonderful stop. Some interesting history about the area, but presented in a really creative way. Some cool art spaces too and a bustling cafe. Would definitely recommend to any visitors to Dubbo.
It’s worth visiting this place if you ever visit Dubbo. Information desk are polite and helpful. Content are more diverse and educational. This place still need to be more inclusive on indigenous culture, living and heritage.
I was surprised how much I liked the Cultural Centre and would definitely go back again to see new exhibits. The cafe was modern and well attended. I thoroughly enjoyed my time visiting. The staff were very helpful.

DUBBO REGIONAL BOTANIC GARDEN REVIEWS
A step away from the everyday, yet right on Dubbo’s doorstep. I instantly felt like I was transported to Japan, and I loved it! A great place to come and get in touch with nature and to clear out your head!
Such a calm, peaceful place for a short walk or picnic. Unfortunately the waterfall wasn't operating when we were there this time. Plenty of ducks and pretty trees.
Beautiful gardens. Absolutely loved exploring them. The playground right next to them is EXCELLENT! One of the best I've ever seen. Kids loved it.
