Maitland Gaol, alternatively recognized as Maitland Correctional Centre, stands as a heritage-listed former Australian prison situated in East Maitland. The commencement of its construction dates back to 1844, with the first prisoners entering its confines in 1848. Over the years, Maitland Gaol witnessed the execution of 16 men between 1843 and 1897. Having housed some of Australia's most hardened criminals, the gaol ceased operations on January 29, 1998, marking its closure. Earning the distinction of being the longest continuously-run gaol in Australia, it has undergone a transformative shift. Today, Maitland Gaol has evolved into a museum and stands as a prominent tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into its historical significance and the narratives of the past..
