Hunter Region Botanic Gardens cover an area of more than 130 hectares in Maitland. The garden was established on 11th November 1985 and is a public, not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. The garden has been preserved as natural bushland. Hunter Region Botanic Gardens features a visitor centre, café, gift shop and reference library. The garden is constantly growing as new displays are developed for recreational, educational and scientific purposes. In addition, the garden cultivates many rare endangered plants and holds a collection of over 10,000 dried plant specimens. The site and its facilities have a fascinating history. Maitland Regional Art Gallery features a complex consisting of three complementary sections. The Art Gallery is now an interactive space for workshops, exhibitions and other activities for children and young people. In 2009, it was renovated. The new building includes ample contemporary gallery space for visitor collections and exhibitions. The central areas show a fascinating interaction between historical and modern architecture. General admission to Maitland Regional Art Gallery is free, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
