“St. Mary's Star of The Sea Cathedral serves the community's needs after World War II, requiring a more substantial structure. The cathedral was officially completed and opened in 1962. Its fundamental mission is to provide individuals of various ages and backgrounds opportunities to enrich their understanding and connection with Jesus Christ. The cathedral's construction was envisioned and executed by architect Ian Ferrier. Notably, the first stone for St. Mary's Star of the Sea Cathedral was sourced from Rum Jungle, a uranium mine site in the Northern Territory. Additionally, the cathedral serves as the episcopal seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Darwin. The history of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Cathedral dates back to the late 19th century. This history is encapsulated in a series of stained glass panels adorning the west window, donated by the Australian and U.S. armed forces. These panels vividly depict their respective emblems, serving as a memorial within the cathedral.”
