ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL

2 St Marys Road, Sydney, NSW 2000 DIRECTIONS

Since 1821

Here’s The Deal:
St Mary's Cathedral was established in local sandstone, with the Gothic Revival style architecture. The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Immaculate Mother of God. It features flying buttresses of the chancel and nave, one of the oldest and unique design styles featuring outside of the building. St Mary's Cathedral's interior has the white pinnacles of the High Altar Screen. By 1881, the church was installed with stained-glass windows, crafted in the Hardman studios of Birmingham, England. The church is designed principally in the Geometric Decorated style of Gothic, which first evolved around the 13th century. It is not a copy of a particular medieval Cathedral but is a unique design, drawing on certain elements of its medieval forbears. The altar in the Chapel of the Irish Saints is a later addition designed and executed in Italy of marble. St Mary's Cathedral's organ was installed by Orgues LeTourneau, a Canadian organ builder.

ST PATRICK’S CHURCH HILL

20 Grosvenor Street, The Rocks, Sydney, NSW 2000 DIRECTIONS

Since 1844

Here’s The Deal:
St Patrick's Church Hill is one of the most spiritual Churches in Sydney. The church was established in the early 1840s to serve the very beginnings of Catholic lives in the community. Due to the fast-growing population in the city, the church's design does not fit, so an architect was hired to re-design the construction. After years of construction, the church was officially opened in 1844. St Patrick's provides easier access to university studies for Marist seminarians to have an academic and spiritual formation on young people. The church holds a strong history and convinces with evidence to support multiple traditions in the community. The parish regularly runs an RCIA program offering people an opportunity to prepare to be received into the Catholic church or to recommit themselves after a period of absence from the church. St Patrick's Church Hill has been revered by generations of Sydney Catholics because of its traditional link to Fr Jeremiah O'Flynn during the earlier times.
