“Saint Mary of the Angels Basilica has been a spiritual refuge since its establishment on November 27, 1842. Originally a small wooden chapel, This church was embraced by a growing Catholic community, gathering for regular Sunday and weekday Masses. As the population expanded, so did the church. In 1937, a new Gothic revival bluestone building was completed to serve the local Catholic families better, offering a more spacious and lasting place of worship. Today, the basilica continues to play a vital role in the community, hosting worship services and providing Sunday classes for children who attend government and private schools. Over the years, the church has undergone several restorations and renovations. St. Mary of the Angels Basilica also acknowledges and honours the deep spiritual connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with the land. The basilica is committed to the ongoing journey of reconciliation and recognizes the importance of this relationship to the country.”
