Waterworks Reserve is a serene, leafy reserve area featuring various walking trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds. There are eight designated picnic sites available for visitors. The tree-shaded lawns and children's play areas of Waterworks are popular for picnics and barbecues. For the energetic, walking tracks lead around the reservoirs and up into the bushland of Ridgeway towards the mountain source of the water. There are two undercover barbecue sites. All barbecue sites without shelter are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Site 1 in the park has a sheltered area with a capacity of 15 adults and an uncovered section for 15 people, equipped with a barbecue and water tap. Site 2 has a capacity of 25 adults and is intended for larger groups if the exposed portion is also used. Pedestrian access is always available through the turnstile next to the main gate. Waterworks Reserve is open year-round, every day of the week.

Cascades Track has a network of walking tracks and fire trails. It is a great option for a walk in the bush close to the city, with or without your dog. The vegetation along this track is quite diverse, ranging from open forests to fern-filled gullies. The arched stone bridge was built at the first creek crossing to commemorate Peter Degraves, the founder of Cascade Brewery. The trail is ideal for walking or biking. Visitors can spot wildlife and numerous wallaby runways crossing the track. Cascades Track allows dogs on a leash. The track crosses the creek, and the moss-covered trees make it a beautiful hike. The track is suitable for beginners as well as more advanced hikers. Visit Cascades Track and enjoy an exciting trail. At the end of the track, you can retrace your steps or continue up kunanyi Mount Wellington via the Myrtle Gully Track.

2025 Update: Knocklofty Reserve is a pleasant, easy,kid-friendly hike. There are very clear trails and it's suitable for everyone and there is a significant green space. Tracks are in good condition, and there are several steep sections. Signage needs to be improved. The only directions are arrows on small posts and often confusing. You need your mobile phone for directions if you are unfamiliar with the area. Knocklofty Reserve provides Bins, Picnic Tables, Seating, Shade Trees, Walking Tracks, and wildlife. The visitors are loop walk gives you wonderful views of the mountain, the river, and the northern suburbs. Knocklofty Reserve offers a Wheelchair accessible entrance facilities and Wheelchair accessible parking lot.
