“Waterworks Reserve is a serene, leafy reserve area featuring various walking trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds. There are eight designated picnic sites available for visitors. The tree-shaded lawns and children's play areas of Waterworks are popular for picnics and barbecues. For the energetic, walking tracks lead around the reservoirs and up into the bushland of Ridgeway towards the mountain source of the water. There are two undercover barbecue sites. All barbecue sites without shelter are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Site 1 in the park has a sheltered area with a capacity of 15 adults and an uncovered section for 15 people, equipped with a barbecue and water tap. Site 2 has a capacity of 25 adults and is intended for larger groups if the exposed portion is also used. Pedestrian access is always available through the turnstile next to the main gate. Waterworks Reserve is open year-round, every day of the week.”

“Cascades Track has a network of walking tracks and fire trails. It is a great option for a walk in the bush close to the city, with or without your dog. The vegetation along this track is quite diverse, ranging from open forests to fern-filled gullies. The arched stone bridge was built at the first creek crossing to commemorate Peter Degraves, the founder of Cascade Brewery. The trail is ideal for walking or biking. Visitors can spot wildlife and numerous wallaby runways crossing the track. Cascades Track allows dogs on a leash. The track crosses the creek, and the moss-covered trees make it a beautiful hike. The track is suitable for beginners as well as more advanced hikers. Visit Cascades Track and enjoy an exciting trail. At the end of the track, you can retrace your steps or continue up kunanyi Mount Wellington via the Myrtle Gully Track.”

“2025 Update: Knocklofty Reserve is a pleasant, easy,kid-friendly hike. There are very clear trails and it's suitable for everyone and there is a significant green space. Tracks are in good condition, and there are several steep sections. Signage needs to be improved. The only directions are arrows on small posts and often confusing. You need your mobile phone for directions if you are unfamiliar with the area. Knocklofty Reserve provides Bins, Picnic Tables, Seating, Shade Trees, Walking Tracks, and wildlife. The visitors are loop walk gives you wonderful views of the mountain, the river, and the northern suburbs. Knocklofty Reserve offers a Wheelchair accessible entrance facilities and Wheelchair accessible parking lot.”

This place is such a beautiful place to have a picnic or enjoy those fantastic summer days with a family or group there is quite a few sites to chose from and all have BBQ’s and running water and most have a really nice water view, if you are lucky enough to get a waterside you will certainly enjoy the scenery. You have to book the sites hear they are all numbered and have a sign you need to write your name on along with date . The facility’s are free and well maintained along with the surrounding gardens. Access is locked each night night and opens early each morning so camping is not aloud.

Great place for a large family BBQ or picnic offering scattered shelters overlooking the dam. I think you can book sites through the Hobart City Council. Unfortunately.. no swimming, this is part of Hobart's water supply, but there are many interesting short walk in this historic place and also the starting point of longer adventures and plenty of room to play. There is a public toilet too.

Such an amazing place literally within 15min from Hobart city. I was gobsmacked by the calm and quiet environment so close to city. Only thing I heard when I was there birds chirping and water flowing. I would love to be there again to have a little weekend picnic or bbq with a group of friends.

CASCADES TRACK REVIEWS

Hiked the Cascade Track behind the Cascade brewery through to Myrtle Falls. Awesome track! Starts in woodland forest then snakes it way down towards a flowing creek and back up into and up through Tassie rainforest. All up about 40 minutes from the start of Cascade to the start of Myrtle then it’s another 10 minutes to some lovely waterfalls. Sign posted along the way to guide you through. Easy to moderate track with some rocky ups and downs, a few old bridges to cross and steps to navigate. Round trip from brewery to the falls is 90minutes to 2 hours, depending on how quick you want to walk. Highly recommend doing it. Good for kids and older people.

This is a cool little track that weaves along the rivulet taking you from the brewery to the tracks at the top. The track moves across the rivulet and the Moss covered trees make it a beautiful hike. If you get to the top you can keep going and walk to the cabin and from there it is an easier walk to say the Sphinx Rock View and others.

Short 2.3 km trail starting from behind Cascade Brewery. Not too difficult, mostly flat compared to Myrtle Gully which is clearly steeper and wetter. Pleasant cold morning walk (5 C) in May 2022. Paths are clear and unlikely for a hiker to get lost.

KNOCKLOFTY RESERVE REVIEWS

A terrific piece of bushland that connects to Mt Wellington. The loop walk gives you wonderful views of the mountain, the river, and the northern suburbs. Remember to keep your dogs on-leash unless you’re in the off-leash area to protect the native animals.

Great spot for seeing wallabies and birds. I go there for some me time photographing the many species of bird life.

Quite good. Went at night. Lots of good views and good tacks.
