He is also the Vice-President of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, a board member of the SET Board for Neurosurgery at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and the Chairman and Fellowship Coordinator for AO Spine Australia and New Zealand. A/Prof Hansen has extensive expertise in cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve surgery, covering the entire field of neurosurgery. A/Prof Richard Ferch completed his medical degree at the University of New South Wales and began his career as a Resident at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. He later worked as a Medical Officer in Papua New Guinea and rural New South Wales. In 2003, A/Prof Richard Ferch was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). Since 2004, he has served as the Director of Research for the Neurosurgery Department at John Hunter Hospital, where he also developed the post-fellowship spine surgery training programme. He is a member of several professional organisations, including the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, the Spine Society of Australia, the Cervical Spine Research Society, and the European Cervical Spine Society. Dr Ferch has authored over 25 papers published in peer-reviewed journals and remains active in research. Additionally, he is the Director of the Spinal Fellowship programme. He practices as a Visiting Medical Officer for Neurosurgery and Spine at John Hunter Hospital, Lingard Private Hospital, and Newcastle Private Hospital.
